Dear Dr. Chaou,
I have recently discovered much information about the Pu-Li Christian Hospital on the internet and am writing to let you know that I worked for one year (1960–1961) at the original hospital. At the time I had completed my internship and one year of residency in internal medicine in Los Angeles. I learned of the hospital from a friend who had visited the work in Taiwan of Lillian Dickson and World Vision. When I arrived in Pu-Li all patient care was in the original small huts and buildings developed by Bjarne Gislefoss. During my year the formal hospital was partly constructed and patient care was gradually transferred there. I worked with Bjarne, Joyce McMillan, Don and Betty Williams, Dr Hsia and Ruth Lim. That hospital was completed after I left to continue my training in the United States.
I must tell you that the wonderful year I spent in Pu-Li determined the direction of my subsequent career, which was spent with Johns Hopkins University and was devoted to international health and infectious diseases, especially diarrhea, pneumonia and other major causes of morbidity and mortality among young children in developing countries. After completing my training in internal medicine I spent two years in India doing research on cholera and other diarrheal diseases and later on spent eleven years with the World Health Organization in Geneva working on the same problems. All of this came from my experience in Pu-Li and the introduction it gave me to the health problems of developing countries.
Of course, it is evident that Pu-Li and the hospital have changed so dramatically in the past 50 years that I am sure I would have difficulty recognizing the town, although I am sure the mountains are as beautiful as ever. I am astounded at the evolution of the hospital into a large and thoroughly modern facility. I am sure neither I nor any of my colleagues in 1960 could have dreamed such change would be possible. As you might expect, I have many pictures of the original hospital and of the persons who worked there and were served there. I would be happy to share some with you if you should be interested. I tried to find your e-mail address, but was unsuccessful. If you are able to respond to this letter you could do so by e-mail to natepierce@earthlink.net. I would then be able to e-mail some photos to you. I am wondering if you also might have the address or e-mail address of Bjarne Gislefoss. I would much appreciate being able to contact him. I know that his wife, Alflid, has died, but I hope he may still be living and well.

Thank you for your letter on January 22. All of us have just back from our Chinese new year’s festival. We are always very exciting to receive the message from our old staff. Thank you for contact us.

The years you were in Puli, 1960~1961, were the period when hospital starting to change the way of service from clinics to hospital. People’s names you mentioned were all great grandparent level in the current hospital staffs mind. Joyce McMillan died four years ago in Taiwan. She has done a great job in polio children care over the western coast of Taiwan.

Hospital has an opportunity to help Burkina Faso to establish a CHU, central university teaching hospital, within the capital Ouagadougou. We regard this as an assignment from Our Lord Jesus Christ, to have the opportunity to feedback the help from western country during 1956~1976. That probably is the reason why the information about the Puli Christian Hospital increased on the internet recently.
 
Attached is a file which I have collected some old photos during the year around 1960s. Hope you find some good old face and brought back you more wonderful memory. Certainly, we are very much appreciated if you can share some of your old photos to the hospital also. We are now collecting the all kinds information related to that period of the hospital. After the catastrophic earthquake 1999, Hospital has managed to preserve part of the old building, set a historical corner, and there is a small museum in it. We sincerely welcome you to pay us a visit in the future if you may. Please keep praying for us, for the job our Lord has put in our hand.
